GFCI and AFCI Combo Switch Wiring Diagram and Connection

Hey, in this article we are going to see the wiring diagram and connection procedure of GFCI and AFCI combo switches. A GFCI combo switch is the combination of a GFCI breaker and a built-in combo switch. Some GFCI combo switch comes with an inbuilt outlet also. Similarly, An AFCI combo switch is the combination of an AFCI breaker and a built-in combo switch. Some AFCI combo switch comes with an inbuilt outlet also.

The terminals and connection procedure are the same for both GFCI and AFCI combo switches just the difference is GFCI provides protection against ground leakage fault whereas the AFCI provides protection against ARC fault. So, both of them have a total of seven terminals - two for inputs(line and neutral), two for outputs(line and neutral), two for switching terminals(Line and Load), and one for grounding connection. The switching terminals are brought out from the backside of the combo switch through wires. The other five terminals are screw-type. Remember that, the GFCI combo switch has input terminals at the bottom side and output terminals at the top side whereas the AFCI combo switch has input terminals at the top side and output terminals at the bottom side.

Here, you can see the wiring diagram and connection of the GFCI and AFCI combo switches with the power supply and Lights.

Different types of Combo Switches

GFCI Combo Switch

It is built with a GFCI breaker and an SPST(Single Pole Single Throw) switch. It does not have any outlet. Of course, we can connect an external outlet with its output.

GFCI Combo Switch with Outlet

It is built with a GFCI breaker, an SPST(Single Pole Single Throw) switch, and a three-port outlet. The outlet is GFCI protected as it is connected to the GFCI breaker.

AFCI Combo Switch

It is built with an AFCI breaker and an SPST(Single Pole Single Throw) switch. It does not have any outlet. Of course, we can connect an external outlet with its output. So the connected ordinary outlet also be ARC fault protected.

AFCI Combo Switch with Outlet

It is built with an AFCI breaker, an SPST(Single Pole Single Throw) switch, and a three-port outlet. The outlet is AFCI protected as it is connected to the AFCI breaker.

Connection Procedure

GFCI Combo Switch Connection

Here, the light will be controlled by the switch and it is GFCI protected.
  1. Connect the line and neutral terminals of the input power supply to the downside input terminals of the GFCI switch.
  2. Now connect any one terminal of the combo switch to the output line terminal of the GFCI switch.
  3. Connect another terminal of the switch to the line terminal of the light.
  4. Connect the neutral terminal of the light to the output neutral terminal of the GFCI switch.
  5. Connect the ground wire to the grounding terminal of the switch.
  6. The output line and neutral terminal can be connected to the external ordinary outlet so that will be leakage current protected.
  7. If you do not want to protect the light from ground leakage then connect the neutral terminal of the light to the neutral terminal of the main input power supply and the line terminal of the switch to the line terminal of the main input power supply.
  8. Remember that the connection of both GFCI switches with outlet and without outlet are the same.

AFCI Combo Switch Connection

Here, the light will be controlled by the switch and it is AFCI protected.

  1. Connect the line and neutral terminals of the input power supply to the upside input terminals of the AFCI switch.
  2. Now connect any one terminal of the combo switch to the output line terminal of the AFCI switch.
  3. Connect another terminal of the switch to the line terminal of the light.
  4. Connect the neutral terminal of the light to the output neutral terminal of the AFCI switch.
  5. Connect the ground wire to the grounding terminal of the switch.
  6. The output line and neutral terminal can be connected to the external ordinary outlet so that will be ARC protected.
  7. If you do not want to protect the light from ARC fault then connect the neutral terminal of the light to the neutral terminal of the main input power supply and the line terminal of the switch to the line terminal of the main input power supply.
  8. Remember that the connection of both AFCI switches with outlet and without outlet are the same.
