Portable Generator Connection Diagram with Home Power Supply

Hey, in this article we are going to learn how to connect a portable generator to our existing home power supply system. The portable generator is used as a backup power supply when the main utility power supply is not available. The portable generator is to be connected to our existing home wiring system in such a way that when the utility power supply is available, all the electrical loads will operate with the utility power supply, and the power supply is not to be linked with the generator that means this time the generator should be completely disconnected. But when the utility power supply is not available all the loads should be operated with the generator power supply and at that time the main utility power supply should be completely disconnected.

We cannot every time manually connect and disconnect the generator and utility power supply with our home power system. So here, we need to use a changeover switch. The changeover switch helps to disconnect and connect the generator and utility power supply interchangeably as per our requirement. There are two types of changeover switches are available in the market - Manual and Automatic. The manually operated switch we need to operate manually to change the power input source but the automatic switch will automatically detect the available power source and operate.

Equipment Required

Here is the list of some additional equipment we required to connect a generator to the existing home power system.
  1. A 63A Changeover Switch
  2. A 32A or 63A power socket as per your generator rating.
  3. Portable Generator

Connection Procedure

  1. First of all, install the changeover switch, power socket, and portable generator as per your suitable place.
  2. Remove the existing connection between the energy meter and your home distribution board.
  3. Now connect the output of the energy meter to the source 1 terminal of the changeover switch.
  4. Now connect the newly installed power socket to the source 2 terminal of the changeover switch.
  5. Connect the output terminals of the changeover switch to the main input of your home power system means to the distribution board.
  6. Remember that all types of changeover switches need the same connection, you just need to find out the source 1, source 2, and output terminals before doing the connection.
  7. Now connect the electric plug from your generator to the power socket.
  8. Connect the earthing where required.

Operation

  1. When the utility power supply is available, keep the changeover switch at source 1 position so all the loads in the home will operate with the utility power supply.
  2. When the utility power supply is not available, first turn on the generator.
  3. Now turn the switch into source 2 so all the loads will operate with the generator power supply.
  4. Now, when the utility power supply resumes first turn the changeover switch into source 1.
  5. Then turn off the generator.
