Four(4) Way Traffic Light Control Circuit Diagram and Connection



Hey, in this article we are going to see the circuit diagram for a four-way traffic light control. Here, we have shown the circuit with small LED lights for understanding purposes. You can build this circuit for your electronics project also. Although this circuit can implement on a large scale for practical implementation. You just need to add some additional components such as Relays and high-voltage power supplies.

Here, in the four-way traffic light control system we will control for two routes - North-South and East-West. When the East-West route is open the North-South Route should be closed. That means at the same time two ways should be red and the other two ways should be green. And we use yellow for a few seconds while red tends to be green or green tends to be red. This is a fully automatic process. The main disadvantage of this circuit is we cannot manually turn on or turn off the lights individually or cannot set time individually for them. Here, all the lights will turn on and turn off at the same interval 


Components Required

  • IC 4017 - 1 PCs
  • IC 555 - 1 PCs
  • LED, Red Color - 5 PCs, Green Color - 4 PCs, Yellow Color - 4 PCs
  • 1N4007 Diode - 8 PCs
  • Resistor 220 Ohm - 1 PCs, 680 Ohm - 1 PCs, 1 Kilo Ohm - 1 PCs
  • Ceramic Capacitor 0.01uF -1 PCs
  • Electrolytic Capacitor 10uF - 1 PCs
  • 20K Preset - 1 PCs

Connection Procedure

  1. Connect Q0 to Q3 all the pins of the IC 4017 together through 1N4007 Diodes.
  2. And then connect it to the series combination of north-south green and east-west red LEDs.
  3. Also, Connect the Q5 to Q8 all the pins of the IC 4017 together through 1N4007 Diodes.
  4. And then connect it to the series combination of east-west green and north-south red LEDs.
  5. Connect the series combination of North-South Yellow LEDs to the Q4 pin of the IC 4017 and another end should be connected at the input side of the East-West Red LEDs. 
  6. Connect the series combination of East-West Yellow LEDs to the Q4 pin of the IC 4017 and another end should be connected at the input side of the North-South Red LEDs.
  7. Connect a 220ohm resistor in series between the negative terminal of the power source and the cathode terminal of the LED.
  8. Connect the Vcc terminal (pin 16) of the IC 4017 to the positive terminal of the power source.
  9. Connect the Ground (pin 8), Enable(Pin 13), and Reset(pin 15) Terminals of the IC 4017 to the Negative terminal of the power source.
  10. Connect pin no 3(output terminal) of IC 555 to pin no 14(Clock Terminal) of IC 4017.
  11. Connect a LED between IC 555 output terminal and ground in series with a 680-ohm resistor.
  12. Connect pin no 4(reset) and pin no 8(Vcc) of the IC 555 to the positive terminal of the power source.
  13. Connect pin no 1(ground) of the IC 555 to the power ground.
  14. Connect the Control terminal(pin 5) of the IC 555 to the power ground in series with a 0.01uF capacitor.
  15. Connect trigger(pin 2) and threshold(pin 6) terminals together and then connect to the series network of resistor and capacitor.
  16. The series network is built by connecting a 1K fixed resistor, a 20K Preset, and a 10uf Electrolytic Capacitor in series.


Operation and Working Principle


When we power up the circuit, first the Nort-South green and East-West red LEDs will turn on. After a few seconds the Nort-South green will be turned off and the Nort-South yellow will turn On and till now the East-West red LEDs will remain on. After a few seconds, the Nort-South yellow and East-West red LEDs will turn off and the East-West green and Nort-South red LEDs will turn on. After a few seconds, the East-West green LEDs will be turned off  and East-West yellow will turn On and till now the Nort-South red LEDs will remain on. After a few seconds, the East-West yellow and Nort-South red LEDs will be turned off and the Nort-South green and East-West red LEDs will turn on which means the sequence reaches to the first stage. Thus the less will be turned on and turned off continuously sequence-wise. By varying the value of the 20K Prsete we can change the time duration of the turning and turning off the LEDs.
