LED Chaser Circuit Diagram and Connection using IC 555
In this article, we are going to see the circuit diagram of a LED Chaser that contains 10 nos LEDs. LED chaser is basically an arrangement of multiple LEDs where one by one LED will turn on and off so it looks like running. It is a very simple and easiest way to make LED sequence lighting and it looks amazing. Here, we have used red color LEDs only, but you can use other colors also. Even you can use a combination of multiple colors. By placing the LEDs in different positions you can make different sequences also. This type of circuit can be used in car night riders, Christmas lights, and many more electronic projects.
Components Required
- IC 555 - 1 PCs
- IC CD4017 - 1 PCs
- LEDs - 11 PCs
- 10K Resistor - 1 PCs, 680 Ohm Resistor - 2 PCs
- Ceramic Capacitor 0.01uF - 1 PCs
- Electrolytic Capacitor 10uF - 1 PCs
- Variable Resistor or Preset 10K - 1 PCs
- A 6V to 9V DC power source
Circuit Diagram
Here, you can see the LED Chaser Circuit Diagram and connection between each component.
Connection Procedure
- Connect the positive terminal of all the LEDs to the output terminals(Q0 to Q9) of the IC 4017.
- Connect the negative terminal of all the LEDs to the main power supply negative terminal in series with a 680-ohm resistor. You can connect the resistor to all the LED's positive terminals instead of connecting a single resistor with the negative terminal.
- Connect pin no 3(output terminal) of IC 555 to pin no 14(Clock Terminal) of IC 4017.
- Connect a LED between IC 555 output terminal and ground in series with a 680-ohm resistor.
- Connect pin no 8(ground), pin no 13(enable), and pin no 15(reset) of the IC 4017 to the power ground.
- Connect pin no 16(Vcc) of the IC 4017 to the positive terminal of the power source.
- Connect pin no 4(reset) and pin no 8(Vcc) of the IC 555 to the positive terminal of the power source.
- Connect pin no 1(ground) of the IC 555 to the power ground.
- Connect the Control terminal(pin 5) of the IC 555 to the power ground in series with a 0.01uF capacitor.
- Connect trigger(pin 2) and threshold(pin 6) terminals together and then connect to the series network of resistor and capacitor.
- The series network is built by connecting a 10K fixed resistor, a 10K Preset, and a 10uf Electrolytic Capacitor in series.
Working Principle
When we apply the power supply to the circuit the LED starts glowing one by one. The LED connected to the Q0 pin will glow first and the Q9 will be the last. Once the last LED is turned off, the first LED will turn On, so they continuously glow in a loop. We can set the speed of the glowing LED by rotating the Preset. Basically, the IC 555 provides a pulse signal to the IC 4017. While we rotate the preset the duty cycle of the output pulse gets changed. This circuit can be implemented on a large scale by using relays and some additional components.
